Critical Thinking and Native Language Teaching

I. The Power of Deeper Thinking in Native Language Learning

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking education helps students to accumulate knowledge, search for new perspectives, and develop multiple viewpoints in the process of exploring different issues. To cultivate meaningful ideas, a familiar cultural environment is a prerequisite for in-depth thinking. With the implementation of the double-reduction policy in Mainland China, it becomes more important for students to acquire critical thinking skills with a solid knowledge base for future development.

Value Formation

The most important step in developing critical thinking skills is to recognize the complexity of information inputs, and construct independent and objective viewpoints in the process of understanding the world. In particular, through the development of thinking in native language, students would be able to develop a perspective that is specific to their own cultural identity, and hence, forming values that integrate with their identities.

II. Importance of Critical Thinking

According to the Ivy League, students who have participated and awarded in debate and public speaking competitions are 33% and 48% respectively more likely to be admitted to Ivy League universities. UNESCO recognizes critical thinking as the most important skill for the new generation, and the 1991 U.S. National Education Goals Report states that "more students should be trained to think critically, to communicate effectively, and to solve problems efficiently".

It is of paramount importance for any citizen of the international community nowadays to understand and respect each other's differences in the context of their cultural identity. The Chinese Ministry of Education officially stated that a Critical Reading and Expression Working Group would be set up to enable students to learn to "think and express themselves responsibly and methodically based on evidences".

Therefore, critical thinking is not to prepare for any individual subjects, but a necessary condition for nurturing any future talents in society. We can only integrate and apply our knowledge in real life if we no longer solely emphasize on memorization and recitation.
